Band to traverse the country from October to February, with more than 30 dates scheduled!
Sydney quintet The Rumjacks unleash the extraordinary energy and passion of their third studio album Sleepin’ Rough today via FOUR || FOUR. Sleepin’ Rough is full throttle, raucous and real, showcasing a thundering punk aesthetic intertwined with the group’s Irish and Scottish musical heritage.
Having spent the last three months overseas on a 90-date tour of Europe and UK,
The Rumjacks are pumped to bring their blistering live set home to Australia, playing new album tracks alongside fan favourites. The Sleepin’ Rough tour is the band’s most ambitious Australian tour to date - 35 dates taking in every nook and cranny of the country, from Darwin to Launceston, East Coast to West Coast! They are one of this country’s most successful live exports, becoming Festival regulars throughout the UK and Europe and playing massive events such as Woodstock Poland, Punk Rock Holiday, Exit Festival, Lowlands, Rockmaraton and Mighty Sounds.
Sleepin’ Rough picks up where 2015’s Sober & Godless left off, carrying stories of life, love and loss, set to a throbbing beat. The music, while hard and fast for the most part, carries with it an element of fun and frivolity, harking back to their Old Country roots, places where music is an integral part of community gathering, soundtracking the times with an almost savage joy.
First single ‘A Fistful O’ Roses’, was an emphatic protest at Sydney’s venue lock-out laws, with accompanying music video directed by Josh Groom. Follow up single ‘Fact’ry Jack’ is a nod to one of the last great larrikins, as singer Frankie McLaughlin says, “A real knockabout with a tonne o' character. He's seen the very best and worst this world had to offer and has a razor sharp sense of right and wrong to show for it. We've all known someone like him, and if not, then we're poorer for it, we could learn a thing or two from blokes like him”.

Sleepin’ Rough released TODAY on via FOUR || FOUR.
It’s what’s become vintage Rumjacks; there’s no point beating about the bush, it’s out the gate and straight down to business.
Recorded at Bomba Studios in regional Victoria, Sleepin’ Rough, the Sydney quintet’s third long-player, picks up where 2015’s Sober & Godless left off. Booming from the get-go with ‘Patron Saint Of Thieves’, a thundering punk aesthetic intertwined through the group’s Irish and Scottish musical heritage, this album is full throttle, all spit and bile, raucous and real.
But don’t make the mistake of thinking The Rumjacks are just an angry bunch of punks. Far from it – their music, while hard and fast for the most part, carries with it an element of fun and frivolity, harking back to their Old Country roots, places where music is an integral part of community gathering, soundtracking the times with an almost savage joy.
And this is Sleepin’ Rough. The melodic‘A Fistful O’ Roses’, the acoustic‘Les Darcy’, the ska-esque ‘Kathleen’, all carry a cheeky bonhomie, sometimes belying their subject matter, but always bringing a smile, a head-nod, a foot-tap. These tracks sit tidily alongside flat-out punk (the opener, ‘Dead To Me’, ‘Zielona Gora’), and the band’s now trademark mixture of the two.
As frontman Frankie McLaughlin has said, they’re not trying to reinvent anything, they’re just trying to produce the best songs they can in order to make a connection with the people listening. And that’s what Sleepin’ Rough is too – a clutch of real songs written and performed by real people, for other real people. Stories of life, love and loss, set to a throbbing beat. Sleepin’ Rough sees The Rumjacks in career best form.
First single 'A Fistful O' Roses' was released in May...
A MESSAGE FROM THE BAND:
Hi everyone! Johnny here. Right now we are currently in the middle of a nice long European tour and enjoying every second. The shows have been great and have been seeing some amazing parts of the world. Feeling very blessed!
Just wanted to let you all know that we are VERY happy to announce that we will be releasing our third full length album 'Sleepin' Rough' through Four | Four Records on August 5.
We spent a little over two weeks locked away in country Victoria in Bomba Studios with Steve James once again steering the ship and producing this new record.
This is the first time we have ever packed our bags, headed out to the middle of no where, locked our selves in one big room and recorded an album. It was new, scary, exciting and worth every second. We are very proud of this album and can not wait to share it with you all.
Thank you for your continued support and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it.
New single and video ‘A Fistful O’ Roses’ in protest at Sydney’s lock out laws
The Rumjacks unveil their first new music in more than a year with the release of brand new single, ‘A Fistful O’ Roses’. The song is an emphatic statement about the band’s view of Sydney’s new lock out laws and features a powerful music video directed by Josh Groom, which shows the band taking over a bar for a metaphoric wake with an arresting live performance.
Frankie: “We’ve written many a song about our hometown of Sydney, and ‘A Fistful O’ Roses’ is yet another, though this one was created beneath a very dark cloud and a sorely difficult time for our beloved city.
An agenda of sweeping law reforms and increasingly heavy tactics by our state government have crushed the city’s nightlife, the livelihood, and in many cases even the lives of many of its inhabitants. Iconic pubs, bars and restaurants are forced to close their doors, elderly residents are driven from their homes and Sydney is growing more desperate and hostile with every passing day.
This is a city under siege by those who rule her, set to become a playground for the elite, while the people who made it the treasure it was are squeezed out to wherever they hell they may venture.
We performed the video for the song as a macabre ‘dry wake’, set among the decay, in a derelict pub, one of many to fall victim to the states new order.
Historic footage flits across the screen like memories of a life flashing before one’s eyes. ‘A Fistful O’ Roses’ is one last great send-off for the old girl, but make no mistake....this is a band falling very much out of love with its muse.”
The band has departed Sydney and embarked on a four-month UK and European tour, showcasing this new single plus songs from their much loved album releases.
BIGSOUND is kicking off again on Wednesday in Brisbane and it is all about the music, but this year in particular the organizers at Qmusic have put a strong emphasis on issues for women both in the music industry and our community in general. A campaign around women’s safety in live music venues, and violence against women is #noton is a campaign that Sydney band The Rumjacks endorse wholeheartedly.
BIGSOUND and venues will have staff wearing #noton campaign t-shirts, making a commitment to involve themselves in an on going project designed to train venue staff and security around better dealing with and responding to women's safety in live music venues.
Frankie McLaughlin, lead singer of The Rumjacks, was convicted in 2012 of charges pertaining to assaulting a former partner. He has pledged his support for the principals of #noton – ultimately, to see a world and an industry where women are not subjected to any form of violence.
The Rumjacks have committed to discussing with QMusic, #noton during the event and discussing how to move forward in support of these campaigns.
The Rumjacks will perform at BIGSOUND on Thurs 10th September, at The Foundry at 11.20pm.
Very happy to announce that for the first time ever we are heading to the UK and Europe!
Looking forward to playing in some amazing parts of the world, with some amazing bands and meeting some new friends.
This is just the first announcement and we have more shows to be added in Ireland, UK and more through out Europe.
Thank you and see you soon.
Adam, Frankie, Johnny, Gabe and Anthony.

When asked what ‘Plenty’ was about, Frankie said, ”It’s a rallying cry for irregular folk, A unifying call (and response) for anyone living life in the real world, with all its bumps, dents, cracks scars & warts. Imperfections create friction, and friction creates warmth,.. warmth is essential to human life. Sing it loud!!!”
Sober & Godless is our new album and isto be released on our own label ‘Black Matilda Music’. The album was produced by Steve James (Thin Lizzy, The Jam, The Screaming Jets).
Frankie: “The making of this album saw us wondering at this whole folk/punk thing as a wider genre, and what it means to us. The sickeningly rich tradition of people telling their story to song has continued unbroken by time, distance or malevolence. We see no good reason why it should stop with us. Call it celtic punk, folk, rock or whatever, we have to keep telling each other our story, thats the only thing that keeps us human.”
Johnny summed it up best.
'Since we started we NEVER wanted to do anything half-arsed. That has never changed and never will. Seeing the results from working our arses off for Sober & Godless has only made us want to work harder than we ever had'
The Official Release Date for ‘Sober & Godless’ is Friday 6th February, 2015.
